She took the class to assist her daughter, and they both got bitten by the spinning bug. She quickly realized that spinning got her double the enjoyment out of wool, because she could spend relaxing time spinning and get more fun later by knitting with it. Her teaching method is to find what works for YOU, even if it might be a little different from what everyone else is doing. We start with the basics, and tweak it to fit your style. Spinning should be fun and joyful, and using a spindle is an excellent (and portable) way of making your own yarn. She's never stopped crocheting since that summer, having now become addicted to making crocheted amigurumi. She later learned to knit in college when her character in a play was supposed to knit for income, talk about method acting! For two decades Heather has been designing and teaching knitting and crochet, but her heart lies in curating her yarn collection and buying fiber art tools of all sorts. Heather will never refuse a tasty cracker, chips, or anything crunchy. She also likes bread. Mmm... bread. Students will need 100-150 grams of DK or worsted weight yarn, a size 6 (DK),7 or 8 (worsted) 24” circular needle and DPNs of the same size. Thrums were originally scraps of yarn leftover from weaving projects, but now roving (tufts of unspun wool) is used. Roving thrums are added every 4th round to create that layer of wool insulation that felts with use. Be sure to use a yarn and fiber that has not been given a superwash treatment, because this project requires felting to create that firm lining. This shawlette is made in a modular fashion, starting with a large block featuring slipped stitches and cables. The second row of blocks throws in an entirely different texture created with yarn overs draped over live stitches. The third changes the pattern again, introducing mitred squares. The fourth section is knitted on the bias and returns to the motifs of earlier sections. The fifth creates a border that ties everything together.
