Yarn Tasting at A Yarn Market

OK, we aren’t actually TASTING the yarn.

Have you ever picked up a skein of yarn and asked “What do I do with this?” This guided tasting is for you! You’ll receive samples of various yarns and we will knit or crochet our way through them, discussing fiber content (what it’s made of, how it differs from other fibers, what to expect working with it), colors, dye methods, plies, and more so that you have the tools and knowledge to confidently pair yarns with patterns for a project that you’ll love to make and wear.

You’ll be provided with a worksheet that you can keep in your yarn basket as a handy reference!

Some needles and hooks will be provided, but feel free to bring some of your own! (We’ll be sampling everything from fingering/sock weight to super bulky)

Knitting Thrummed Mittens at Southern IN Fiber & Arts Festival

  • Harrison County Fairgrounds (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Description: Originating in Newfoundland and Labrador Island, thrummed mittens are a fun way to create wonderfully warm, fleece- lined mittens. Thrums were originally scraps of yarn leftover from weaving projects, but now roving (tufts of unspun wool) is used. Roving thrums are added every few rounds to create a layer of wool insulation that felts with use and these mittens get better every time you wear them!

HOMEWORK: Homework is 3 inches of ribbing (or length of their choice) so we can jump right into making and adding thrums.  If the student doesn't do the homework, the thrummed alternative is a little pincushion/cat toy to get thrum practice.

Items Included: Natural roving, pattern, a handmade stitch marker.

Student Provides: 100g of worsted weight wool or wool blend- cannot be superwash.

Prerequisites: Student should be confident in knitting and purling in the round.

Minimum Age of Participants: 10  (under 12 must have adult present)

Part 2 - Design Your Own Stocking! (Knitting)

Can you knit and purl in the round? You can make a stocking!

Bring whatever skills you have to class and we'll design and start a Christmas stocking. Solid colors? Stripes? Cables? Colorwork? It's your project!

This class will focus on stocking construction rather than a particular stitch or technique.  You'll leave with the ability to create your own stocking pattern from any yarn you choose.

Stockings are also a fantastic way to start knitting socks. You will learn how to make the leg, turn a heel, pick up a gusset, knit a foot and finish the toes so that you can apply those lessons to traditional sock knitting.

Please finish the leg of your stocking and be ready to put in your heel by the second part of this workshop.

Part 2 - Steeking your Checkered Flag Headband at A Yarn Market

It is time to level up your knitting.

Bring your knitted headband to class. You do not need to block it before class. You’ll also need the rest of your headband kit (we need that yarn) and a needle that’s a little smaller than the one you used in your headband (ie if you made the headband on size 7’s, bring size 5 or 6. Straight or circular- doesn’t matter). If you’ve picked out your buttons, bring them! You’ll need 3.

We will reinforce our work, make the cut, and make our button bands to finish our headband.

Curious about steeking? Feel free to join this class if you didn’t make the headband! You can bring something else to steek or just watch and learn. The lessons covered will apply to all steeking projects.

Checkered Flag Fair Isle Class at A Yarn Market
May
11
2:00 PM14:00

Checkered Flag Fair Isle Class at A Yarn Market

This class is a gentle introduction to Fair Isle knitting, also known as stranded colorwork.

You’ll have two options with this class.

  1. Fair Isle headband. No funny business, just a checkered flag that you can wear around your head! You’ll race through this project in no time!

  2. Steeked Fair Isle headband. Come back for part 2 on June 15th and we’ll cut your headband open and add a button band. After we finish knitting the headband, we will reinforce our work and then cut a straight line up a column of stitches before finishing with a tidy hem. This technique is most commonly used on sweaters (turning a pullover into a cardigan, or cutting holes in Fair Isle sweaters to insert sleeves) but we’ll be playing it safe with a much smaller project.

Prerequisites! This is an intermediate to advanced knitting class. You will need to be able to knit and purl confidently in the round with consistent tension, and be able to read a pattern. If you have questions about experience and whether or not this class is a good fit for you, feel free to reach out to Paige.

Supplies! You’ll need a checkered flag kit (available from A Yarn Market) and size 7 24” circular needles. If you’re a loose knitter, you may want to bring a smaller size needle, if you’re a tight knitter, you may want to bring a larger size. We’ll be working with the fabulous Malabrigo Rios in a black and undyed colorway.

Homework! Homework is optional, but it will help you get the most out of class. Casting on and doing the ribbing before class will give you more time to practice your Fair Isle in class. See the pattern provided with the kit for more information.
